Tubbrid Castle, Co. Kilkenny / Conversion of Tower House, a protected structure, at Tubbrid Upper as a single residence

Description

The introduction of mechanical and electrical services, as well as fire safety precautions, were crucial to the success of the project. A plant room was constructed beside the Tower to keep most of the apparatus outside of the historic structure. Historic garderobes and soil chutes were used for the main inward vertical routing of services, gathering of drainage outfalls and mechanical extract ventilation. Underfloor heating was provided for the limestone paving and oak boarding was used in the main chambers and landings. Electrical outlets were contained in recessed boxes within the new floors. A single large island unit was installed at first floor level, incorporating the kitchen appliances with underfloor drainage outfall to the garderobe. Arched fire doors were overlaid with oak planks and incorporated floor recessed door closers. Sensors were used to omit hard wiring to switches within the stairwells and wireless heating and lighting controls were used as much as possible. This project was awarded 'Highly Commended' at the Irish Georgian Society Conservation awards 2019.
