Kickham Barracks / Conservation

Description

Bluett & O'Donoghue Architects were part of a multi-disciplinary team in the development of a masterplan for the vacant Kickham Barracks, a large site of considerable historic and architectural significance to the immediate west of Clonmel town centre. Although the plan form of pars of the barracks had been lost, the site retained a large number of protected structures and historic buildings. The brief was to create a masterplan to cater for new cultural and educational uses, with a number of new urban spaces. The strategy was conservation-led, with each of the surviving buildings and features assessed for significance. This informed the allocation of new uses and helped to identify opportunity sites for new development. The resulting masterplan included for a linked sequence of new urban streets and places, which will in time allow the barracks campus to form an integrated part of the town centre. Our input was led by Michael O'Boyle Grade 1 Conservation Architect, who worked closely with Sean Harrington Architects and Tipperary County Council in developing the masterplan
